An overnight trek into the Sahara Desert is an unforgettable adventure, but it requires a bit of smart packing. The desert is a land of extremes, and being prepared will ensure you stay comfortable.
The biggest mistake travelers make is assuming the desert is always hot. While daytime temperatures can be scorching, the temperature plummets as soon as the sun goes down. In winter, it can easily drop to freezing. Pack lightweight, breathable long sleeves for the day (to protect against the sun), and a warm fleece, jacket, and even a beanie for the night.
A long scarf is essential. Your guide will gladly show you how to tie it in the traditional Berber style (a 'cheche') to protect your head, face, and neck from the intense sun and windblown sand during your camel ride.
Leave the heavy hiking boots at home. Sandals with straps or comfortable closed-toe sneakers are best. You will likely end up taking them off to walk barefoot in the soft dunes anyway!
While our luxury desert camps have full en-suite bathrooms, it's always smart to have wet wipes handy during the camel trek and for quick clean-ups when dealing with fine desert sand.
You will be taking hundreds of photos of the stunning dunes, the sunset, and the stars. Ensure your phone and camera don't die by bringing a high-capacity portable charger.
