Merzouga Desert

"The Sahara Gateway"

Merzouga is the primary gateway to Erg Chebbi — a stunning expanse of towering golden sand dunes reaching up to 150 meters high. This is the quintessential Saharan desert experience: camel treks at sunset, luxury desert camps under a billion stars, traditional Berber music around the campfire, and magical sunrises over an ocean of golden sand.

The journey to Merzouga is itself an adventure — crossing the dramatic High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n'Tichka pass, winding through the Rose Valley and Dades Gorge, past the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou kasbah, and along the legendary 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs.' Upon arrival, the vast Erg Chebbi dunes rise from the desert floor like golden waves frozen in time. The experience of riding a camel caravan into the dunes as the sun sets, dining under the stars, and waking to watch the sunrise paint the sand in shades of gold, amber, and rose is truly life-changing.

History & Culture

Merzouga is a small, dusty Saharan village that serves as the primary gateway to Erg Chebbi—a spectacular sea of wind-blown, golden sand dunes that reach heights of up to 150 meters. The culture here is distinctly Berber and Sahrawi, shaped by centuries of nomadic life in one of the world's harshest environments. Visitors are welcomed with legendary desert hospitality, experiencing traditions that revolve around camel caravans, celestial navigation, and communal living around the campfire under some of the clearest, most star-studded skies on Earth.

Local Cuisine

Desert cuisine is hearty, communal, and designed to provide energy for the harsh environment. The local specialty is 'Medfouna,' often referred to as 'Berber Pizza.' It consists of a large, round flatbread stuffed with minced meat, onions, nuts, and a fragrant blend of desert spices, traditionally baked directly in the hot sand or a communal mud oven. Meals are always concluded with sweet 'Berber Whiskey'—the affectionate local name for heavily sweetened mint tea.
