Geology & Fossil Tour

Tour Overview

Join us on an incredible 10-day expedition designed specifically for geology enthusiasts, fossil collectors, and nature lovers. Morocco is globally recognized as a paleontological paradise, boasting exceptionally preserved trilobites, dinosaur fossils, and remarkable mineral formations. This tour will take you through the dramatic thrust faults of the High Atlas, down into the ancient Precambrian and Paleozoic rock formations of the Anti-Atlas, and out to the vast Sahara Desert.

Led by expert local guides and specialized diggers, you will visit world-famous sites like the Fezouata Shale, the "Trilobite Capital" of Alnif, the Devonian beds of Jbel Isoumour, and the Cretaceous dinosaur haven of the Kem Kem Beds. Along the way, we will explore historic mineral mines like M'Ifis, Chib Rass, and Filon 12, hunting for baryte, galena, and vanadinite crystals.

This tour flawlessly blends thrilling scientific discovery with the enchanting culture of Morocco. Between dig sites, you will experience the magic of authentic Berber hospitality, marvel at the architecture of ancient kasbahs, and cap off your desert exploration with an unforgettable night of stargazing and astronomy in the sweeping dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day1

Arrival in Marrakech

Arrival at Menara Airport and transfer to a traditional Riad in the Medina. Your expert guide will provide a briefing on the tectonic history of Morocco, focusing on the collision of the African and Eurasian plates that formed the majestic Atlas Mountains. Enjoy a relaxing evening exploring the vibrant red city and preparing for the expedition.

Day2

Marrakech Tizi n'Tichka Ouarzazate

Drive across the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) to observe the dramatic Mesozoic stratigraphy. We will examine the impressive Triassic red beds and Jurassic limestones along the route, stopping at local salt mines in the Ounila Valley to view the massive thrust faults of the High Atlas uplift. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou before continuing to Ouarzazate for the night.

Day3

Ouarzazate Agdz Zagora

Travel south through the lush Draa Valley, exploring Precambrian and Cambrian boundary outcrops with stunning views of the Jbel Kissane Ordovician syncline. A major highlight today is a visit to the Fezouata Formation near Zagora. This site is world-renowned for its exceptional Burgess Shale-type preservation of Lower Ordovician soft-bodied organisms, including giant anomalocaridids and early horseshoe crabs.

Day4

Zagora Alnif

Journey east into the Anti-Atlas Mountains to explore rich mineral deposits and ancient rock formations. In the afternoon, arrive in Alnif, famously known as the "Trilobite Capital," to hunt for giant Paradoxides (Cambrian) and Calymene (Ordovician) trilobites with local Berber diggers. Enjoy genuine Berber hospitality in the evening.

Day5

Alnif Jbel Isoumour Merzouga

Embark on an off-road 4x4 adventure into the Maider Basin, focusing on the famous trilobite mountain of Jbel Isoumour. We will explore the Bou Dib escarpment and the famous Psychopyge horizon, named for its rare trilobite species. We will also visit the nearby site of Atchana to meet local miners working the Ihandar Formation for perfectly preserved, spiny Devonian trilobites like Dicranurus monstrosus and Paralejurus spatuliformis. Arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon to observe the eolian (wind-blown) geomorphology of the 150m high Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Spend the night at a comfortable desert hotel.

Day6

Merzouga Exploration (Mines, Fossils & Stars)

A full day of 4x4 exploration! Head south to the Tadaout-Tizi n'Rsas anticline near Taouz, where the Silurian/Devonian boundary reveals incredible pelagic crinoids and their lobolith floats. We'll explore Chib Rass and the famous Filon 12 vein; originally a haematite mine, you can now take an underground tour to discover stunning vanadinite and goethite crystals. Finally, explore the Cenomanian-aged Kem Kem Beds, deposited by a massive ancient river system, where we hunt for Spinosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus dinosaur teeth. Tonight, stay in a luxury Desert Camp and enjoy a dedicated astronomy session under the incredibly clear Saharan sky.

Day7

Merzouga Erfoud Todra Gorge Dades Valley

Start the day with a panoramic view of Hamar Laghdad, also known as the "Kes Kes"—a spectacular series of Devonian cold seep mud volcano mounds on which rich coral reefs once grew. Continue to Erfoud to see how giant blocks of Devonian Orthoceras and Ammonite marble are polished in local factories. View the Gara Medouar (the Portuguese Prison), an impressive erosional caldera, and continue to Todra Gorge, featuring massive 300-meter vertical walls of Jurassic limestone faults, before settling in the Dades Valley for the night.

Day8

Dades Valley Skoura Ouarzazate

Study the "Monkey Fingers" (Tamlalt) in the Dades Valley—bizarre Eocene/Oligocene conglomerate rock formations shaped by intense weathering and erosion. Travel the "Route of 1000 Kasbahs" through the Valley of Roses, and explore the localized Precambrian stromatolite fields (fossilized cyanobacteria algae) near Ouarzazate.

Day9

Ouarzazate Telouet Marrakech

Return journey to Marrakech via the historic Ounila Valley and Telouet Kasbah. We will discuss the Cretaceous manganese deposits near the Imini mine (Amerzgane) and take panoramic photos of the spectacular stratigraphic layering and thrust faults of the High Atlas. Enjoy a free afternoon in Marrakech to explore the vibrant souks.

Day10

Departure from Marrakech

Enjoy breakfast at your Riad. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for some last-minute shopping or sightseeing before your private transfer to Menara Airport for departure, carrying 500 million years of geological history with you!
